My wife and I are doing P90X together...

As the title says, my wife and I are doing this together. I am an ex athlete and male cheerleader, but my body shape now would not prove it. I am really excited about "what could be" with P90X. My biggest frustration right now is the diet and supplementation. When to eat? What to eat? Am I eating right? Those types of questions. I welcome any feedback on the diet. I am currently 5'11' and 185 pounds. I will put up some photos later this evening. Like I said, any feedback is welcome. Thanks! Jonathan

First off, welcome to the world of P90X! You will definitely love it! It's a great thing to be going through it with your wife also, because it really helps to have that added motivation of someone else going through the same thing. A little competition isn't a bad thing either. ;)

Now, with regard to nutrition, the best advice I can give you is to follow the P90X nutritional guide exactly until you're comfortable enough with the principles to be able to modify it to better meet your needs. If you use the guideline sin the book to determine your daily caloric needs, and the related P90X nutritional plan you should be on, you cannot go wrong.

The basic principles of the plan are to eat 5-6 small meals a day, in the right proportions of macronutrients (protein, carbs, & fat) and to create a daily caloric deficit (or surplus) appropriate for your weight loss (or gain) goals.

I try to space my meals out every 2-3 hours and keep them equally balanced in terms of calories and macronutrients. The only exception to this is that my morning meal is a little more carb-heavy than the rest and my last meal of the day is mostly protein.

As far as WHAT to eat, I would use Michi's ladder as a reference to see what types of foods fall into each category but, some of my staples are:

Protein: chicken, turkey, salmon, tofu, tempeh, egg whites, cottage cheese, whey protein
Carbs: brown rice, sweet potatoes, oatmeal, whole grain pasta, quinoa, fruits
Fats: seeds, nuts, avocado, olive oil, fish oil, peanut butter

Some of the foods in the above list contain multiple macronutrients (e.g. salmon is high in protein AND fats, quinoa has a lot of carbs and a decent amount of protein, peanut butter is high in fat but contains protein and carbs as well)

Experiment with lots of different foods to find what works best for you and start to build your own list of staples. It becomes a lot easier to quickly throw together meals if you have a kitchen well-stocked with food that you love that also meat your nutritional requirements.

Good luck!

Thank you very much for the feedback, I really appreciate it! This week was the first week we started, and the yoga (yesterday) and the legs and back (today) kicked my tail! Well, actually all of them have.

I will implement your nutritional info as well. Since we are in the fat burner/slimming down phase, what should our carb intake be? The sheet says one serving a day, but what is that? My goals would be to cut down bodyfat (more definition), first, and then see what I look like and how I feel before I determine if I should add any muscle to my frame.

Thanks!

recovery drink protein bars
6/18/09 6:55 AM as a reply to jmwalker1.
Just an update. The wife and I both lost 5 pounds the first week, and we both feel better than we have in a while. So, that is great news!

Here are some questions. I welcome ANY feedback...

I ordered the recovery drink and protein bars. I was surprised at the amount of sugar in a serving of each one. What has been the experience you have had with the recovery drink or the protein bars???

How do you mark something "waiting for an answer" on the forum?

Thanks!

Hi there! My husband and I just started on June 16th. We'd love to join in on the journey with you. I know how you feel about the eating...we are still trying to fine tune our menu in our first week. I should be getting my recovery drink and P90X Peak Health vitamins today! I wish UPS would hurry! From what I understand you should be sure to take a good daily multi-vitamin. I listened in on a webinar training last night and Mark Briggs who is one of the team beachbody founding coaches said that the 2 (that he would recommend is either the P90X Peak Health or another one called ALIVE that you can buy in stores I guess). He said to stay away from Centrum or One a day types because they are loaded with fillers and also coated so your body will not be able to absorb as much. Hope that helps! Let me know how the bars taste. I just picked some up from the store to get me by for now. Gotta go push play in a little bit. Keep it up you'll feel better than you ever have!

Well, we have finished Day 30. I think Amy's progression over the last 30 days has been really awesome. Mine has been okay, but there may be some fine tuning that needs to take place for me, such as diet. Obviously, I am probably my own worse critic. We are both "bringing it" with the workouts, so we will keep the intensity high!

I have been reading over a lot of the posts in the forum concerning nutrition, and there is a wealth of knowledge here that I hope to incorporate into my training. Thanks to everyone that posts and shares info online. I appreciate it.

Congrats on completing month 1! My husband and I are in our 4th week as we speak. Time sure flies by when you're having fun! Can't wait to start some of the new workouts in month 2! Good luck with the fine tuning... I know the diet part is probably the hardest part to keep up. I've found that we really need to plan ahead and stock our kitchen with good stuff so it lessens the temptation of "convenience foods" if you know what I mean. Now that we've changed our eating I notice that I have a hard time finding things that I want to eat from restaurants.

Keep up the good work!emoticon

Way to go guys! I have been participating now since July 2. I have brought my husband somewhat on board. I definitely have noticed the increase in energy. I also have had some issues and struggles with the nutrition plan. When we looked at it to decide which approach we would take, the meal plan approach looked like it would be the simpliest - just to follow the plan - eat what it said - really no thinking involved. As we have started the program now for about a week, I am finding it it hard to find some of the items for the recipes they provide. My husband is also difficult when it comes to vegetables - he doesn't like broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, to name a few. I'm trying to change out some of those with green beans or other veggies.

Good luck and keep up with it - I will be watching for you!

Hi everyone,
I thought I could get through P90x without a support group, but I was sorely mistaken! I started out on June 16th. I'm doing pretty well with the diet blocks, sometimes falling a little below the 1800 because I don't have the recovery drink. I haven't seen a lick of difference in my weight or measurements, but I feel great. I don't have a ton to lose. I'm a medium build, 5'4 @ 135lbs. I hoped to lose about 7 to 8 lbs overall and tone up. I did sprain my ankle during kempo my third week...cross jab switch, bam!!!lol I kept on going though, working around it the best I could. I was soooo mad...Kind of broke my spirit a bit, that and not being able to see a difference yet. But I'm thinking that the first thirty days might not bare the greatest results?! Keep going, by 90 I'll have something to show for it, right?!
Congrats on the teamwork!!!! Husband and wife at the same time is an accomplishment in and of itself!!! My husband said he'll jump in when he gets back from Annual Training in two weeks. He's been working on his run time for his PT test. Glad to be here!!!

Lightnup,

You will see the biggest differences in your body, energy, and strength in the 2nd and 3rd months. The first month is meant to start you off slow to get your body used to doing some of the exercises since most people have never done some of them before. Hopefully you took before pics so you will see the differences, because there will be some. I wasn't "seeing" any changes after 30 days until I compared my before pics and my 30 day pics and then I realized what I had done. I became a believer in the program and in myself once the pics provided the proof.

Hi Laura,
Glad to see someone else posting on this thread! (you too lightnup!) My husband is a little difficult with the eating at times as well. We've been doing a combination of the portion meal plan and we also use some of the recipes in the P90X book. I've also been using Shakeology shakes as a meal or snack. This shake is great when it comes to taste and nutrition! Its basically equal to 5 trips to the salad bar plus a lot more believe it or not! Go to Shakeology.com for more info. Maybe you can use this in place of some of the veggie servings for your husband, and you too of course! It also has a good amount of protein in it too! I'm about out of my Chocolate flavor. I've been mixing it with a banana, 1 Tbsp peanut butter,1 cup water and 1 cup ice (if I don't have a banana then I use an additional 1/4 cup of water). Its more like a treat to me! (almost like a reeses peanutbutter cup) Oh, I just remembered another thing we use for a veggie serving... V8 low sodium drink. It tastes pretty good. I don't know if he'll like it but its worth a try. Maybe you can add a celery stick, a dash of tabasco and some black pepper in it and make it a virgin bloody mary type drink!emoticon

Hi Lightnup,
We started on the same day! Sorry to hear about your ankle, hope its doing better! Keep up with your good eating and workouts and you will definitely see changes! Everyone's body is different so results will not happen the exact same time for all. The weird thing for me is I've lost pounds and inches but when I look at my pictures they don't look too different. BUT when I look in the mirror and see how my clothes are fitting looser I can see a huge difference. Maybe I took my picture on a day that I was retaining water if you know what I mean!emoticon Do guys have fat and skinny days like us girls? Most of the people who have been through the program say that you will see bigger changes in the 60-90 period just like turboscott said. You mentioned your husband is doing his annual training, is he in the National Guard? I was in the Air National Guard about 5 years ago. P90X will really help him get stronger to do good in those PT tests. I can't remember if we had to do push ups and sit ups too. Well whatever they have them doing now he will see great improvement in all areas I'm sure!

Keep up the good work and talk to you soon!

Thanks so much for the tips! My ankle is feeling great today and I had a great rest day yesterday! I'm glad you both told me progress will definately be coming in the next 60 days. And yes....water retention, hehem...!!! I should have taken my 30 day pics tomorrow, because I swear I've lost inches and lbs in a few days (without hard labor). Gotta love bein' a lady!! I was doing the lean version, but I decided to switch to classic. I love the burn and the weight lifting. But I'm doing the 10-12 reps for leaner muscle. What versions are you girls (& guys) doing?
Oh, my husband is in the National Guard. He was actually deployed with a unit from Hawaii. A group of them had a little band and he got to here Hawaiin music under the Middle Eastern Night Sky's! He is set on going to Hawaii now. Do you miss it?!

Hey Lightnup,
I know what you mean about from day to day our body can look and feel like you lost or gained 5 pounds! Maybe I'll try taking another 30 day picture on a day I'm feeling a little skinnier!emoticon I'm doing the classic version. I think that maybe the extra weight training in it may help you progress a little quicker because muscle does burn fat! But keep in mind too that muscle also weighs more than fat but takes up less space in your jeans!emoticon I'm trying to do about 12-15 reps depending on the exercise.

Oh my gosh, I was in the Hawaii Air National Guard and worked as a C-130 crewchief! Is your husband Air or Army? I absolutely miss it! I miss the music too! I really miss the environment because of all the water sports and outdoor activities year round. Hope you guys can go there one day!

Keep pushing play!

I am really surprised that this thread has gotten the replies it has, which is great!! Amy and I did AB Ripper X last night and for whatever reason, MY ABS WERE ON FIRE. I normally can get through it, but last night was tough...which is good. My coach says that pain is just weakness leaving your body. I have to keep telling myself that when I workout! I did Plyo this morning and I was soaked when I got done. Time for the recovery drink. We are two weeks from finishing Phase II of the first round.

WENDY: Yes, I take a good multi-vitamin called Mega-Man from GNC. I am sure they have some comparable for women. I have used two types of P90X bars, the blueberry ones and the peanut butter ones. I actually prefer the blueberry ones, which is surprising because I like peanut butter. I also use Pure Protein bars and Premier Nutrition bars, which can be found at Sam's Club if you are a member.

Laura: Concerning the diet, I eat around 2,100 calories a day. Veges are great because you can eat a ton without taking in a lot of calories. But I have found that I try to eat "useful calories" instead of taking in fewer calories. Here is an example of my diet plan. P90X is a calorie burner. If he wants to get ripped, he will need to make sure he does not put his body into starvation mode, thereby holding onto fat sources.

Lightnup: I feel your pain. I didn't really start dropping until Phase II. P90X is designed to keep you at or close to your current weight, but to tone your muscle and reduce fat. You are roughly the same size as my wife, and she has had really good results, so stick to the dieting and keep going. On the recovery drink, make sure you drink it on the days you do Cardio for sure. If you feel like you are wasted during your workouts, sip on it during your workout to help you through it. Sometimes it isn't about the measurements, but how you feel. Also, stay off the scale for a while, and then check it. I have quit measuring my success by what the scale tells me my weight is. I can do more pull-ups and push-ups than I could do in my life. Turboscott is right as well!

Thanks everyone for posting. Put up some pics if you want to. Take care, Jonathan.

Hi there,

Thought I'd check out your thread. I'm starting Round 2 of P90X and my wife is starting to participate more often with me. She did YogaX with me often during Round 1 but couldn't bring herself to working out after our 12hr shifts at work which in reality turned into 14 hr days leaving only a couple hrs at night to unwind before going to bed.

I knew when I started over 3 months ago I would have to commit myself to following the recommended program and do those workouts on nights after work if I was going to get some noticeable results. And it has been a great journey. I now have more energy than I ever did as a couch potato the first 50 years of my life.

I have a whole new life perspective now and as a side benefit some muscles where I never believed I would.

So, any of you working out with your spouses....I would appreciate any advice to help me encourage my wife to join me more!

Thanks, Wes

Hey gang! Just got done playing catch up on my workouts. I got really busy this weekend and had to skip Sat & Sun! Not happy about that!emoticon Then I did Legs/Back/AbX on Monday, but felt out of it for some reason on Tuesday so I decided listen to my body and rest. Anyhow, I did my Chest/Shoulders/Triceps/AbX/Kenpo workout tonight and had a blast! I wasn't sure how it would go but I felt like I wanted even more "punishment"! Felt great! I tell you P90X is an addiction! If you go a day without it you just don't feel right.

Lightnup, your pictures look awesome girl! Don't even worry about the scale and measurements like everyone is saying. Like Johnathan said, its how you feel about yourself too! But you do look great!emoticon

Welcome Chariotrunner & Wes 105! I'm so excited more people are joining this thread!

Chariotrunner, I have a 2 year old and I have to try and workout when he naps if he decides he wants one. I can't imagine 3 little ones to work around. I guess I can actually do it while he's awake but sometimes he gets in the way and I find I can't focus on my workout as well. Congrats on the compliments too! I'm sure you're looking great!

Wes105, my husband doesn't work quite as many hours a day as your wife does but he tries to do it before or after work. It just depends on how he feels. He's on a afternoon to midnight type shift and tends to sleep in which doesn't leave much time to workout before work. I do know that your wife will probably feel more energetic and better overall if she does a few more workouts. Maybe since she's short on time she may want to look into other Beachbody programs. There is one called the 10 minute trainer! That may be just the thing for her! Good luck!

Have a good night everyone! Keep up the good work!

Wendy, Thanks for the compliments...Totally made my day! I love this thread, everyone is so positive!
Welcome Wes! I commend all of you with little ones for taking this on. Wow. That's all I have to say.
I did Plyo today for the first time, since I just switched to Classic version this month...Whewwy! That motha burns! But it's sooo much fun. I totally agree about the addictive nature.
My husband...Oh, Wendy, he's in the Army National Guard. We will be heading to Alabama after October for flight school. He is going to be a helicopter pilot. Either Chinook or Black Hawk, more likely Chinook because his unit is a Chinook Unit. I love being a military wife and I can't wait to go to Alabama!!! I'm so psyched about meeting you on this thread! Ummmm, you did both of those work outs on the same day! SHEEESH, that's impressive! I'm glad you mentioned you listened to your body. I had to do that one day last week and I thought it helped more than it hurt me. Good to know other people run out of gas to!
Oh, the P90 Gizpaccho soup recipe is awesome. I eat it just about every day. My husband feels very differently about the taste, but he eats it anyway! He's a trouper.
Have an awesome day everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good morning everyone! I did my Back/Bicep workout late last night. After my "catch up" day and last night, today I feel every little muscle in my body! Ouch!emoticon Whew, I'm really gonna plan better next time so I don't have to play "catch up" ... Thank God today is Yoga, I need a good stretch! I still haven't done my Plyo but I'm not sure if I should do it today with Yoga or just skip it for this week. I guess I'll see how I feel. I hate to miss a workout!

Lightnup, yup Plyo is a great workout, all that jumping really gets your heart rate up! Are you guys going to Huntsville, AL? I'm in Murfreesboro, TN. I know there are a lot of choppers in Huntsville. Maybe we could get together one day in the future if its not too far!

Anyway, hope everyone is doing good and pushing play everyday! Keep it up gang!

Have an awesome Friday and weekend!

Hey Gang, glad to see everyone is doing well. I did legs and back today, and by the look of my shirt when I was done, you would have thought I did a cardio workout. For whatever reason, I was doing some SERIOUS DNA removal. I truly enjoy the pull-up workout, but hate the lunge sequences...balance is not my strong point.

WENDY: You are in the Boro, I am in Goodlettsville, TN. I went to school at MTSU and was a cheerleader there...believe it or not, lol. I grew up in Smyrna...go Dawgs!

CHARIOTRUNNER: Wow, three little ones, I bet it is tough to find the time. Amy and I do not have any children, but we have been known to rescue a dog or two for a while.

LIGHTNUP: I LOVE Plyo...probably one of my favorite workouts. That and the Core workout are probably my best. I hate working out my legs, and if you are in my house when I workout legs, you would know I hate it. It is probably good I don't have children, I would be teaching them all the bad things to say at that point, lol.

WES: Glad to see you here. I have read your posts on Derek's thread as well. Isn't he awesome! I would probably not be near where I am today if it were not for his guidance. Nothing like passing on good knowledge! If you wife is working 14 hour days, it might be hard to expect her to workout, especially the X programs. If she is seeing your results, that might be motivating enough. Just encourage her. I am constantly praising Amy's successes, so maybe that might help too.

Talk to you every soon, have a safe weekend!
