I am the founder, dance instructor, choreographer and artistic director of a performing arts academy and a not-for-profit ballet company for the past 24 years. At age 50 keeping up with teaching about 5 days a week an averaging around 6 hours of teaching dance and fitness classes daily is demanding on ones body. My life long dedication and love of dance has enabled me to share this passion with thousands of students from ages 2.5 through sr. citizens. Coaching dance and exercise class along with proper nutrition has taught me not only how important this is for your good health, but as a life style choice. I began studying dance at the age of 4 and quickly became the youngest member on record with a youth professional ballet company. I have danced professionally for many years and traveled touring many cities with a song and dance troupe as the warm-up entertainment before various famous stars of that time. In October of 2005, I was diagnosed with breast cancer my life style as I knew it would be different for a while. Tired, frustrated and depressed my saving grace besides my wonderful family was my passion that I had for dance. All the years of self discipline as a dancer and healthy life style I had led paid off? I was told time and time again from so many doctors who recognized that if I wasn’t in such good physical condition I may have over looked the mass I had found by my own self exam if I was over weight or not so in tune with my body and changes going on. I was also back to work very quickly after surgery and even through many scheduled therapy sessions. Every year for the past 15 I direct and choreograph Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker”, the classical ballet in two acts and four scenes. I have a cast of over 100 children and adults and over the years I have incorporated and changed the traditional ballet so many different talents in the area such as gymnasts, tap dancers, vocalists, actors and magicians could also perform. Principal dancers from New York City Ballet Company have been our special guests in our production annually. My students and their families have held this production very close to their hearts and as their holiday tradition I could not let them down. As they say in the entertainment business, “The Show Must Go On” and it did that one particular December of 2005. In august of 2008 I decided it was time to have reconstructive breast surgery. In the interim I was told to not exercise or lift my arms for at least 2 months. Not only did I notice the weight gain I quickly felt depressed, exhausted and my muscles, joints and bones weakened. I began to over indulge in foods I had not been interested in before. That was when I received an e-mail from a former high school classmate now my Coach Anniek in regards to a “Get Fit Challenge”, along with another fellow high school classmate, Tony Horton. I began working out with P90X because as a dancer I thought it would be challenging for me. That it was but I did it and with in weeks I felt my flexibility, muscle strength and good attitude returning! Not to mention the weight loss. Thanks to Annie and Tony I am back and feel great inside and out. | Please sign in to flag this as inappropriate.
