I have actually been under weight my entire life. I have always been the skinny kid who was nothing but a walking skeleton. Part of the problem for my inability to gain weight was because I suffer from a disease that prevents a lot of the food that I eat from being absorbed. Because of that, I have been malnourished for many years. I met my wife in 2002 and she often describes us as Laurel and Hardy since I was so skinny and she was overweight at the time. Regardless, we fell in love and got married in August of 2003.

One year, my wife just got tired of being overweight and was concerned about my health as well so she asked for some weight equipment and a personal trainer as a Christmas present. She got her wish and I found myself thrust into her fitness craze pretty reluctantly. I went along with it but just wasn’t really in to it like she was. Pretty soon I found myself working out on my own and actually enjoying myself. I found that I could do things without feeling out of breath and started to gain some muscle mass and some weight. With the proper medication and physical exercise, I found I was able to start gaining weight and keeping it on. I have never felt better my entire life! Now I find myself with a small “spare tire” around my middle that I would like to work off and see if I can get those rock hard abs that my wife loves so much.

I learned through all of this that just because I was skinny did not mean I was healthy. I know that I have heard before from overweight people: “I wish I had your problem”, but trust me, you don’t. It is just as big of a struggle to gain weight for some as it is for others to lose weight. The simple answer for all of us is a well balanced diet and exercise.
