My Photos | 55yrsRobert I was lying on the sofa watching my wife Rochelle jumping up and down to Chalene’s Turbo Jam. Get up and try this, its fun she said. It seamed like a lot of effort and sweat and I was always tired after sitting at my office desk all day. Some days I would fall asleep at 8pm right after dinner while watching TV. My spirit was exhausted and I felt like an empty shell and even asked my doctor if I was lying on the sofa watching my wife Rochelle jumping up and down to Chalene’s Turbo Jam. Get up and try this, its fun she said. It seamed like a lot of effort and sweat and I was always tired after sitting at my office desk all day. Some days I would fall asleep at 8pm right after dinner while watching TV. My spirit was exhausted and I felt like an empty shell and even asked my doctor if something might be wrong with me physically. He checked me out and I was fine but could stand to loose some weight, so I just put it aside thinking this is what it’s like when you are getting old. Clearly something was wrong with my outlook on life. Now I know it was related to physical inactivity which caused a psychological problem, and my doctor even suggested that if I continued feeling depressed he would prescribe some medication to change my mood. I’m only 55! I was 207 lbs and 5 ft 9.5 inches tall and was thinking that my life was almost over. Twenty five years earlier my wife, children and I had taken up Taekwondo and took classes three to four times each week for about 2 years. I had a very physical job back then and so I got plenty of sweat in by the end of each day on top of the Taekwondo. We were all fit, happy and full of self confidence. After watching her for four or five classes I finally got up off the sofa because I was curious about how much of the Turbo Jam class I could do. I think Chalene’s words finally got to me. It was an eye opener. How could I have been in such bad shape? I continued to do the classes twice each week and progressed to three times for the next month. I added weights and then increased them after a few workouts. If you can imagine, there was some screaming going on during those classes! I was starting to feel much better about myself and even started to say that I was not that old. Then Rochelle ordered Hip Hop Abs. Man that was fun to do and I was just getting to learn Shaun T’s dance routine when I saw Tony Horton on TV talking about P90X. Now that’s a challenge I thought. It was my turn to try something new! I ordered it and the recovery drink and eagerly waited for its arrival. When it arrived I played the introduction and got all motivated and worked up. I asked my Wife, Son and Daughter in law who is a personal trainer to come and watch Chest & Back and Ab Ripper X. My wife said I was going to get a heart attack if I did that workout. My Daughter in law asked how many diamond push-ups I could do right away. I tried and could only push up once and almost hit my head on the floor on the way down. I’ll do them on my knees if I have to and build up some strength first, I said. Don’t hurt yourself Dad everyone said. I remembered, Tony saying pass the fitness test first. I was determined to try and did pass the fitness test on July 16, 2007. By that time my weight had dropped to 193.5 lbs from doing Turbo Jam and Hip Hop Abs. Thanks, Chalene and Shaun. I started P90X on July 16, 2007 just before my 55th birthday on July 18. I have been working out every day since then in Phase 1 and taking my recovery drink and a protein shake for breakfast. My diet needs to improve and my coach Tina is going to help me with that. I can’t workout early in the morning unless I get up at 4 am so all of my workouts are at 5 or 6 pm before supper unless I’m on vacation. I have not lost any weight since starting P90X so I’m still 194 lbs, but have noticed that my waist is narrower and my shirts feel tighter around my arms and shoulders. Rochelle says my muscles are hard as rock and that I’m starting to look hot! I didn’t get a heart attack after all and she and I can hardly wait to see what I’ll look like at day 90. I was 207 lbs the first day I did Turbo Jam 4 months ago. Also tried Hip Hop Abs before I got into P90X. Since then, I have lost 16 lbs and feel so much better physically and also much more positive mentally. My pants feel loose around my waist and my shirts are tighter around my biceps and shoulders. My wife Rochelle says I'm starting to look hot. I've been taking the recovery drink after each workout and have not had any muscle pain like I used to remember I got from intense workouts in the past. Looking forward to the improvements to come. My diet needs some works and I will try to improve on that for the next 60 day pictures.
