I have done almost all the fitness options out there. Weights, circuit training, aerobics, running, I have tried whatever was “in style”. Over the course of all these programs I still watched my weight and fitness levels vary. In 2000 a disc in my lower back herniated, which meant I could not work out for close to a year. Ultimately I learned how to manage that injury without surgery by strengthening my core and back to avoid strain on my spine. I spent time learning more about how to eat and when, and became better at meal and portion planning. In 2002 I also learned I had a condition called neurocardiogenic syncope, which means I have a tendency to pass out. Unfortunately I learned this after blacking out at the top of the stairs in my home. Falling down the stairs severely aggravated my back condition, leaving me to deal with chiropractors, cardiologists, nerve doctors, neurosurgeons, and a few alternative treatment options. Drugs and surgery seemed to loom before me, but I was determined to find a better way. I firmly believe the body has the ability to heal itself and compensate given the opportunity. After slowly building back up my workout routines through weights, swimming, and biking I began to feel strong again. I would have setbacks now and again, and learned to manage through them. In 2005 I became pregnant with our third child. Although I was in fairly good shape by then, I was never as muscular as I really thought I could be. After my son was born in 2006, my goal was to focus hard on returning to my pre-pregnancy form and better. When my husband bought P90X after watching an infomercial, I was hooked. This would be a challenge that would push me to new limits. What I have learned from P90X is that not only does this program push me where I need it, but my back doesn’t hurt after a workout. It hasn’t hurt from working out since I started! That is exciting to me since usually I have to watch what I’m doing or not do certain things. This can truly be a long term plan and commitment to my personal fitness goals.
