After leaving the Active Army in 2002 and joining the Army Reserves, I had let me physical fitness slide a little. That's not to say that it fell over the cliff, mind you (in my entire career I'd never came close to failing a physical fitness test). By 2006, I was on my way to "maxing the minimum" as we say in the Army. I had gained weight, and for the first time in my career I needed to be tape tested for my body fat percent (meaning I had gone over my allowable weight for my height and age). In February 2006 I tore my right knee meniscus and had surgery that July. I had reached another mile stone in my life: I went over 200 pounds for the first time. After the surgery, I was determined to start turning things around. I took my next regularly scheduled physical fitness test that October and passed (even if it was the closest I had ever come to failing the 2 mile run). Throughout 2007 I maintained a strict diet and workout regimen, which consisted heavily of cardio / distance running. I also began rucksack marching 6-12 miles a week, and strength training in the gym. By October 2007, I was again back to maxing the physical fitness test, scoring a 344 (44 points over the maximum 300 points, maxing with a 100 points each in the push-ups, sit-ups, and 2 mile run). I decided to start the P90X program after seeing the infomercial. I know that I have come a long way since 2006, but I also know that with the right program I can go much, much farther. As I am approaching 40 years old this year, with two of my own sons in the Army (and another couple on the way), my goal is to be the kind of father and leader that they can look up to, respect, and emulate in their own careers. Enough said, Hooah! Ready to "Bring it!"
