My Photos | OldManAndy I'm a 54 year old Electrical Engineer with a wife of 27 years, 2 childen (27, 22) and a granddaughter (3). I've pretty much been physically active a good portion of my life. I was a scholarship college athelete and even tried pursuing a professional tennis career for 4 years (not good enough but it was quite the experience). When I was young and in playing shape keeping 140 lbs on my 5'7" I'm a 54 year old Electrical Engineer with a wife of 27 years, 2 childen (27, 22) and a granddaughter (3). I've pretty much been physically active a good portion of my life. I was a scholarship college athelete and even tried pursuing a professional tennis career for 4 years (not good enough but it was quite the experience). When I was young and in playing shape keeping 140 lbs on my 5'7" frame was a chore. I estimate that I ate somewhere between 3000-4000 (probably closer to 4000) calories per day and fought a losing battle trying to keep my weight up. A 43" chest with a 28" waist was a testiment to my fitness. I got married had two children and, of course, life does get in the way. I stopped playing softball, golf and tennis to help my children through their sports activities all the way through high school. Both my son and daughter were standout high school atheletes with college scholarship opportunites. So, in the end, I made the right choice by concentrating on them....but a bad choice for my fitness. By the time my daughter became a freshman in high school I had ballooned to over 250 lbs (did I mention I am 5'7" tall when I stretch!!!). I can't tell you where I topped out because I'm not sure. I had gone to the doctor for a bout of bronchitis several months before and had weighed in a 232 lbs and was up to size 38 pants. After that I avoided going to the doctor, even calling in for my inhalers and cough suppressant. By the time I decided to do something about my weight I was wearing size 40 pants...I'm sure you can do the math. During my daughter's freshman high school year we joined a local tennis club. Even though I was in no shape to play I started to play league tennis at the urging of the club tennis director. After my first match I knew I had to make the choice to get back in shape or lay down and die. The day after my first match I could hardly walk as both achilles tendons ballooned and I was afraid of what my heart was going through. I started playing tennis 2-3 times a week and lifting weights/doing aerobics 3 other days. In about 6 months I was down to 220 lbs and feeling better than I had in a long time. I was moving well on the tennis court and my game was coming back into shape (for an old man, anyway). I was playing and competing with 20, 30 and 40 year olds and doing better than just holding my own. I even played a short while in the open league where the club pros played. By the end of the following year I was down to just over 200 lbs. Now if you would have told me at the start that I would lose 50 lbs, be playing tennis 3 times a week and lifting weights/aerobics another 3 times a week I would have asked where do I sign up? But something wasn't right. I still felt and looked fat. I was pretty fit, especially for an old guy, but when I looked in the mirror things jiggled and I wasn't as muscular as I thought I should have been. Now I realized that I wasn't 25 any more but I was working harder than anyone I knew and I was very committed and I felt that muscle definition was lacking and that was due to the fat still on my body. I was starting to think that maybe my age had something to do with it, and maybe some heriditary traits but I wasn't convinced. I had plateaued big time for the next couple of years. I ranged from 205 - 212 lbs and that's right where I stayed. In February 2007, my wife and I went on a trip to Punta Cana with some friends and in one picture I took with a neighbor I was appauled at the fold of fat I saw on my tummy. I knew something was amiss and my wife must have felt sorry for me because after the trip she found a Diet and Exercise Assistant program that loading into my Palm. The program logged all of the food you ate and all of the exercise you did each day. For the first time I started to pay attention to my diet. I had been told this was key by a personal trainer a few years ago but didn't want to believe it. When I got the program I had ~ 4 months until my son's wedding and figured this would be a last ditch effort to get under the elusive 200 lb mark. The program was the basic eat less calories than you burn and you'll lose weight...and it worked. After 4 months I lost 21 lbs, went from 211 lbs to 190 lbs and was very happy. As I do each summer, my workouts slowed to accomodate my golf schedule. In Michigan we only have a few months to play golf so my life is filled with work, golf and living on a lake. We have lake front property and, as you can imagine, party all summer long. As usual I gained ~ 6 lbs back and ended the summer at 196 lbs. So it was back to work on me; golf was replaced with tennis and weightlifting/aerobics and I started using the Palm program again. I figured in no time I'd be back to 190 lbs and in the 180's. When Christmas time arrived I had lost a total of 0 lbs, was still at 196 lbs and was as frustrated as I've ever been. I was ready to give up and just live with the fact that my body type, age, heredity or some other mysterious factor was causing the plateau. The 21 lbs I lost earlier in the year was just a memory. And the kicker was that in those 21 lbs I only lost 1" off my waist. Now if someone would have told me I'd have lost 65 - 70 lbs at the start I would have kissed them but you know the old adage about reaching the mountain top only to find more peaks, right? From what I saw in the mirror there were a lot more peaks to climb. Unfortunately, there wasn't much hope, so far as I was concerned, the Diet and Exercise program was my last hope and even that was failing. I just figured that at my age I was past looking as good as I thought I should and maybe I better just live with that and be happy that I was as fit as I was...fat-fit. After the 2007 Holiday season I was watching the Golf channel and saw an infomercial that would change my life... My Progress My Fitness Goal: Tone Up Transformation Story

There's a Chinese proverb that says, "...when the student is ready the teacher will appear..." In January 2008, this student was definitely ready. Unknowingly, everything I had done to this point was getting me ready for the infomercial I was watching one Sunday afternoon about some in-home fitness program called P90X. I was working out hard which was a prelude to the extreme P90X workouts. Three times a week I'd lift weights for ~ 45 minutes then do 30 minutes on the eliptical trainer at my tennis club...then play tennis another 2-3 times a week. I had been logging my food and exercise which is another P90X requirement so I was already well on my way. As I watched the infomercial I noted that most of the folks looked pretty fit to begin with but their results were phenomenal! I also noted that all the people I saw were much younger than me...by some 15 years or so. But I figured if I could get half their results I'd be golden. Then, of course, a 50 year old guy came on and I was sold and it gave me lots of hope. I also liked the fact that the program was based on hard work, not some gimick or gadget and that the hard work used all the same type of equipment I grew up with. It's good to know that the old standards still work well. So I ordered my kit and when it arrived at my house I was excited and scared. At 53 I wasn't sure if I had bit off more than I could chew but I wanted to give it a try. As the typical engineer I studied everything. Went over the videos, the workout book the nutrition book and then waited for about a week and a half so that I could set up my workout room. I purchased a set of Bowflex dumbells, got a new TV for that room, a puzzle mat to put on the floor, yoga blocks and other essentials. Because of my tennis schedule I waited to start my workouts on a Wednesday so that I would only have to do one 5 am workout instead of two. On January 30, 2008, I started the program in earnest. In 90 days only missed one workout (and fretted about it for a week) and kept close tabs on the diet using my Palm program...see I told you EVERYTHING I had done in the past was leading up to this! Week 1, phase 1 I was doing all my workouts, eating 50% protein, 30% carbs and 20% fat (tracked by my Palm program) played tennis 3 days and I gained 1/2 a pound...darn...I was about to shoot someone! I was beside myself, very frustrated and wrote my coach a very lengthy e-mail giving him my daily calorie intake, percentages, what I had to eat and every possible detail I could. When I didn't get an answer from him for several days I figured I must have overwhelmed him and was just going to continue because I had noticed a looseness in my pants that I hadn't felt before. When he answered he let me know that he had passed on my e-mail to a nutritionist friend of his so that he could get the best answers for me. In essence, he wrote that I was doing the right thing, to stay the course and to have a little faith, oh yeah, and reminded me that muscle weighs more than fat. The next week I got an e-mail from a female co-worker that said, "WOW, YOU look GREAT!!!", I still have that e-mail. After that it seemed like I was being stopped by people on a weekly basis asking me what I was doing. Talk about motivation, at one point, my wife of 27 years said she never thought she'd see me like this again, referring to how I looked when we met. No I don't look like I looked when I weighed 140 lbs, had a 43" chest and 28" waist but her point was well taken and much appreciated. For a 53 year old that was all the motivation I needed to complete the program. Fast forward to April 30, 2008...I only lost 11 lbs but people thought I had lost 25 - 30 lbs. I did lose 4" off my waist, went from 32% body fat to 20% body fat and weighed in at 183 lbs. I started going to the doctor again, too. My last physical (Sept. 08) I surprized my doctor not only with my looks but with my numbers. The previous visit he put me on a blood pressure beta blocker and wanted to put me on Lipitor for cholesterol. I let him do the BP but not the Lipitor. This visit my cholesterol dropped 48 points and my HDL, the good stuff is at 60, so no Lipitor for me. He's also looking to wean me off the BP medicine if I can keep this up until my next visit. 2009 is coming to a close and I'll be 55 in two months. I've been very sporadic with my workouts this year and have a new goal to show people what a 55 year old can really look like. You see my white hair and say old guy but I want people to look at all of me and say, must be premature grey. I've got a great base going and have started my P90X routine in earnest again. You'll be seeing lots of good updates and I'm sure I'll be looking for motivation from you. Today I'm pretty sore from starting over again but I feel great. I'm looking forward to showing you what a 55 year old can really look like.
