I started work as a purchasing clerk for a precast concrete company in
Winchester, VA in 1998. I had been with the company prior for 11 years as a
laborer, but due to an injury to my right wrist, I had to move into another
department. I was car-pooling with some guys, and I would most days have
to wait on them to get off of work. I had tried in years past to push myself
into joining a gym or workout with friends, but could never get past the pain
threshold. I wasn’t athletic in high school and I had been out of school at this
point for 20 years and I had packed on about 40 pounds. I felt like, this is life
and this is how it is always going to be. So, I started going to the gym for
something to do, while I was waiting. For the most part, I was happy with
this arrangement, but really never seeing any major results. I thought maybe
it was genetics or I wasn’t putting together the right routine or nutrition plan,
or pushing myself hard enough. I felt frustrated and somewhat defeated, as I
had felt for most of my life. I had been able to lose about 10 – 15 lbs. over
the course of 10 yrs. I was under the misguided impression that if I lost
weight, I would be happy and healthy, I couldn’t have been more
misinformed.

In June of 2007, I had my annual physical and diagnosed as a Pre Diabetic.
My Blood Glucose Level was 120 on a fast, and below 99 is normal. Diabetes
was in my family medical history, my Mothter had it, so I knew how serious it
was to be diagnosed with this. I went to a Pre Diabetic class and learned
some information from the ADA, and was able to put the knowledge into
practice. I watched what I ate and lost 12 lbs., along with exercise which
brought my Blood Glucose Level down to 104. With diet and exercise I was
able to do this in 3 months time. But I need a plan to keep the weight off and
make a permanent lifestyle change.

In September of 2007, I had a friend, who was also one of my vendors from
work,Dan (DLK67VA) come to see me. This guy knew that I was going to the
gym regularly and interested about fitness. When we sat down at lunch to
discuss work, I couldn’t help but notice a big change in his appearance since
I had seen him last. When I asked him about it, he replied, “have you ever
heard of P90X”? Coincidently enough, my brother and I had seen the
infomercial the week before this visit. I felt like I had tried everything to get
in shape, I was hesitant on spending any more money on what I thought was
the latest craze. But when I seen what results he got and how much he was
enthused when he talked about it, it definitely peaked my curiosity. He just
couldn’t say enough positive things about the program. So, about two weeks
later, I purchased P90X for myself. My friend kept telling me that, since I had
been working out for sometime, I would be fine starting with P90X. It is
unlike anything I had ever seen before. The program is detailed as far as the
workouts and the nutritional plan, there is nothing to guess at on what to do
or what to eat. When I purchased my copy of P90X, I was assigned a coach
from Beachbody. We really didn’t correspond too much, a couple of e-mails
here and there. I knew there was more to this than that. So, I did some
research and came across a profile on the Beachbody website of another
coach, Joey 1459 who’s journey was a very compelling story. We both had
the same body type and when I seen what results he had gotten, I knew that I
could get the same results with his help. So, I e-mailed him and we soon
became fast friends. I made the arrangements to change and have him
assigned as my coach and with his guidance, I started seeing results. Joey
was able to steer me in the right direction and I was getting the motivation
that I had been lacking my entire adult life. I did my first round of P90X from
the beginning of November through the holidays and finished in February of
2008. I lost another 10 lbs. and gained muscle and definition. I would take a
DVD player to the gym with me and do the tapes there. After my first round,
people at the gym were asking me “what are you doing”? Because they could
see like I did with my friend, I was getting results. Now, all of sudden, I went
from being the guy who got picked last in sports as a child to the guy who
people were asking for advice on fitness, and it felt good and I felt good.
Later in April of 2008, at the prompting by my coach, Joey, I attended a Tony
Horton Fitness camp not far from my home, in Washington D.C. I got to meet
and workout with Tony Horton live. I learned so much in that one weekend
that it gave me the motivation to become a coach myself. I want to share my
experience with others and help them obtain their goals. I walked away from
that Camp that weekend a changed man. I found out from attending Camp,
that I could push myself harder than I had pushed myself before. Now, I
don’t think of working out as pushing past the pain threshold, I’ve already
pushed passed that and beyond. My confidence and self esteem has went
from almost none existent to knowing no boundaries. I learned that it is not
just about losing weight, but becoming fit, is what being healthy is all about.
Losing weight and looking good are the bonuses of becoming fit. I currently
completed my 4th round of P90X & I'm starting my first round of P90X+. I've purchased the amazing 10
Minute Trainer & P90X+ series from Tony Horton, and I'm just as excited about this
program as I was the P90X program. The three programs together will take me
even further, in my quest for physical fitness. Tony Horton's workouts have
worked for me and others and they can work for anybody who has the
commitment and determination to want more for the their selves and want
more out of life. The rest is up to you.
