Starting in my teens, I was involved in sports and worked out 7 days a week. I left the daily training behind in my 20s, but remained in great shape into my mid 30s. Business replaced my physical activity with a desk and a chair. Over the next 20 years, I felt fine. By the time I was 50, I added a little weight (10 lbs.), and I still felt fine.
I almost forgot to mention that in my early 20s, I started smoking which was a habit that grew to 2 packs a day. I decided to quit smoking at 55. I hadn't had a physical for about 10 years, so I decided to get one along with a chest x-ray. I wanted to make sure that my lungs were clear. Great news, my lungs were fine, however my blood pressure was a little high (143/91), so my doc wanted me to take a treadmill test. The treadmill test was a little off, so he sent me to a cardiologist. The cardiologist scheduled a coronary angiography. The doc said if they found anything, it might be resolved with angioplasty or a stint, and I could go home the same day.
Life had turned surreal, I felt good, I had just wanted to check my lungs. My doctor said, "You don't need angioplasty or a stint. Your right coronary artery is 100% occluded (blocked). Two other arteries are 70% and 40% occluded". They wanted to crack my chest open and play volleyball with my heart...triple bypass surgery.
Six months later, with the addition of another 10 lbs. (now 20 lbs. over), I was looking for anything that would let me feel that I could rejoin the living, healthy people around me. I needed a sense of control again.
I saw Tony Horton, and Beachbody.
My bio is not about the people in my life, the work, hobbies, sports, or even the books that I read. My bio is about the lifestyle choices we all make every day that we share in common. My bio is about the loss of focus, the value of a healthy discipline, about caring for the vessel in which we travel, so that we may complete our desired journey.
Beachbody is about lifestyle change, helping yourself and others. Now, Beachbody is part of my bio.
