And I live in Fairbanks, Alaska. I first moved to Alaska in the Spring of 1982, by being one of the last people to jump on-board "The Columbia" -a 418 foot semi-luxury Alaskan Cruise Ship- just before she pulled away from Pier 49 in the Port of Seattle, and headed North to Alaska. I had seven-hundred dollars in my pocket, a duffle bag full of rugged work clothes, a portable typewriter, lots of steno pads, and a fist full of pens. As a young writer, I was looking for Story and Character ideas, and enough odd construction and fishing jobs that would supply me just enough money to keep a roof over my head, and food in my belly. I found out that Alaska is a land of plenty, and I earned, bought, found and or, built from scratch, everything I needed. This includes a couple of rustic log cabins which are located on part of my six acre farm---boxing-work-out-camp; that I happily call my home-base of operations on my South-facing hillside property ---high in hills above Fairbanks, Alaska... Now, twenty-nine years later, and on the positive side of 50 + years old, I am happy to report that I have begun releasing my books, short storys, plays, and poetry, to a World-Wide reading audience. My work is mostly designed for kids, and as I stated earlier, it is my life goal, and primary intention to help 'Hook Kids on Reading.' I supose, Luckily for me, my latest book Champion is also loved by ever-increasing numbers of adults as well. Most of my latest story's utilize the fictional portrayals of the many wild and zany characters I have encountered since my arrival in Alaska. MY BACKGROUND IN FITNESS: As to my background in Fitness, it really began when I was just out of diapers and old enough to run solo and would get to go along with my parents on our weekend Get-a-Ways from the huge and bustling metropolis of Los Angeles CA. We usually headed South about a hundred and twenty miles with our little 'tow behind trailer' to camp along the edges of the Salton Sea, where my childhood friends and I would run to our hearts-content, up and down the dry creek beds, and all along the edge of that giant inland salton lake. My running habits continued on into my high school years where I met a couple of Awesome PE coaches by the names of Jim Scribner, and Jim Gifford, who not only allowed me to listen-in on their "B Team" Football side-line wisdom -and mentor them- as they coached our "unbeaten" football team with me being a semi-participant as an extra towel boys side-line assistant, as well as allowing me the rare opportunity to be the person responsible to have all the Vince Lombardi, or Knute Rockne recordings ready to to be heard from 'just the right spot on the record,' as the team entered the locker room before, or after their practices, or scrimmages. I was also fortunate to have Coach Scribner as my regular PE class coach in my Junior and Senior years where I was offered the opportunity to volunteer for a Special Pilot Program of Aerobics / Running for the entire 55 minute Physical Education period, every school day all-year-long. This was back in the late 60's when Ken Cooper's Aerobics programs were just coming to light, and Coach Jim Scribner used the information from our Resting Heart Rates, Maximum, and Recovery Heart Rate-data ---(which we took after waiting about three or four minutes after our runs were completed), for his Athletic Research Project. As high school kids, my running partner Steve Hook and I, loved the voluntary 55 minute running program because we were granted 'freedom' and 'the run of the town' each day for our entire PE period, while the rest of our "non-volunteering" classmates were restricted to a "Closed-Campus." My memory of what I learned from Coach Jim Scribner about Ken Cooper's Aerobic Workouts, plus what I later learned from a Awesome book written by the German Olympic Long Distance Running Coach, Dr. Van Akin, helped me in my quest to enter the very competitive world of long distance Road Bike Racing while living in Santa Cruz CA in the middle of the 1970's. The Santa Cruz/Northern California area was then a Mecca of fast bike racing enthusiasts, including one frequent competitor, the teenage bike racing phenomenon, who bore the nickname "The Reno Rocket," none other than Greg LeMond. As a barely a teenager, the young Greg LeMond, was officially allowed to race against much older and more experienced riders, although he was still officially categorized as still a "Junior Rider," and forced to use "junior gearing," by the United States Cycling Federation. (Someday ask me about the rest of his exciting story...) Now some 32 years later, my own exercise and fitness program (which sputtered and almost died-out),is back on-track and is presently conitinuing in full-speed ahead mode, and, if things are right, will include my own yearly 'mini-version' of a Jack LaLanne feat of physical conditioning. My Birthday this year on May 23rd, marks my 55th year of life on the Earth, and I am planning on yet another Super-Fun-Aerobics-Birthday-Work-Out. Stay tunned for the details... Your leaders at Team BeachBody will provide all the Tools You Need to Start and Grow your Business. A Bit of My Personal Fitness History Throughout most of my life I tried with regular success to be in relatively good condition---For example in 1991-1994, when as a returning college student (ages 37-41), I was in good enough shape muscularly, and my cardio vascular condition was in good enough condition that I was able to set a dorm record for climbing four flights of stairs, (40 feet vertical rise), in 11.02 seconds. And then on the University of Fairbanks Ice Arena I was “Unbeaten for an entire three year period“, during the daily skate times for “Our Ritual Ten Lap” Race Series” that occurred when ever anyone was willing to try and whoop “the ol’ dude in the green Docker’s.” Then Things Changed To release thousands of copies of "Taster-samples" of Chapter One of my book Champion, prior to it’s official release in January 2008, I took up the job of being a night-driver of an Airport Shuttle Taxi-cab to-and-from the Fairbanks International Airport “full-time,” (84 hours a week sitting on my butt). I did this job for 4 long years until one of my co-drivers ----in a taxi-cab I leased, suddenly dropped dead. From my perspective, his early death seemed to me, to be from his many years of driving a cab, and an apparent lack of any reasonable health, fitness or exercise plan. My Wake-up Call Due to the early death of my friend, he was a couple of years younger than I -and died at the age of 51, I heeded that ‘close wake-up call,’ and decided to stop driving a cab, and thereby end my own downward spiral of Health and Fitness. My goal once again became to regain the health, Fitness, and Vitality of my younger years, and perhaps earn the chance to live a bit longer and be able to release more books to help hook kids on Reading. With that goal in mind, I moved 25 miles North of Fairbanks, for that Spring, Summer and long Winter, to live full-time on my mountain farm, and be able to do lots of outdoor physical things all year long, to improve my sagging health level. It worked! I am happy to report that my year of acting out the part of Paul Bunyan, and cutting and logging off about 2 ½ acres of a large stand of Spruce trees, offered me a fairly solid foundation, (resting heart rate of 64 beats per minute), and excellent base that offers me the timely launching point for my own BeachBody Fitness, Nutrition and Exercise Plan. After only a few weeks of regular exercise and a closer monitoring of my eating habits, (I now eat only healthy foods), I can already tell the difference in my overall energy levels, and in my general outlook on life. My next plan is to also include the Tasty Meal Replacement Shakeology, one of BeachBody’s Newest and Hottest Products, and the Tony Horton P90 workout video series into my current daily ritual of long run/walks with my Sled Dog Stevie Nyx. I am hoping that with my current rate of general health improvement, that I will soon be in good enough shape to lower my resting heart rate even lower… than the current 64 beats per minute. I hope to see you in the Workout Room soon, and be able to help you chart your course to Health, Fitness and Vitality with Team BeachBody. All the best, Coach Miles Cobbett | ||||||||
