I used to be in decent shape, but four babies later, and a back injury in 2003, the young body that I thought I had, started to act like the old body that I didn’t want. An unhealthy lifestyle, a lot of partying, and some really poor eating habits; my max weight in 2008, at 5’8” tall, reached 216lbs.
An L4, L5 disc bulge coupled with a super weak core, caused me to spend a lot of my time lying down. My back problems were so severe that I pulled my back playing basketball, fell flat on my face during a military self-paced Physical Training (PT) session. I had finally lost control of my body, and it was no longer allowing me to be active. Pain was shooting down my leg and I had to go to the emergency room.
That incident triggered my commitment to a healthy lifestyle. There I was, a 27 year-old “man” lying face down on the gym floor unable to move. Listening to my co-workers laugh at me, not knowing the extent of my injuries. That night I came home from the hospital worried that I was going to get kicked out of the military. My wife does not work, and my job in the military has always taken great care of my family and me. I knew I had to do something, I just didn’t know where and how to start.
The Golf Channel is where I first saw the late-night infomercial for P90X. The testimonials seemed real and didn’t seem like fake actors paid to tell a products story. This program was about how much effort THEY (success stories) put into it, and nothing else. The workouts on the infomercial were workouts that I am required to do in the military; push-ups, pull-ups, calisthenics, and what looked like aerobics. My visits to the physical therapist and the anesthesiologist (for spinal steroid injections) were followed by “recommendations” to strengthen my core and even to do yoga. I had to get back into shape. While researching all the workouts for P90X on the internet the following week, I knew for sure that it was for me. It covered all of the exercises that I did at the physical therapist, at PT, and even the recommended yoga for core strengthening. 90 days later and here I am, I’m in the best shape of my life, and I owe it all to Beachbody and P90X. I started off with the goal of just finishing the 90 days, sticking to the diet, and following all the rules, just to see if I could do it; to prove to myself that I’m in control of my body, and not the cravings for rice, snacks, ice cream, etc…I kept the program a secret until the day I graduated; now I want to tell the whole world my story. Now my goals have changed a little bit, I don't have a full six pack yet, but I'm sure after pushing my body with Beachbody programs and their supplements, I don't see that goal being unattainable. Now, I want to let people know that they can really do anything they put their mind to. The only thing that is stopping them is themselves. I want to tell the whole world my story now. No more secrets, because there are none. Decide, Commit, Succeed!
