Nantucket, MA Hi! Like so many women out there, I struggle with my weight. I have two medical conditions working against me, though. I have been diagnosed with a rare allergy known as "Exercise-Induced Anaphylaxis", where having any amount of food in my digestive system at the same time as I exercise can put me into anaphylactic shock (lips and tongue swell, followed by suffocation.) I have been diagnosed with a rare allergy known as "Exercise-Induced Anaphylaxis", where having any amount of food in my digestive system at the same time as I exercise can put me into anaphylactic shock (lips and tongue swell, followed by suffocation.) So, for years, I have followed my doctor's work out advice of exercising in the morning, on an empty stomach. The other medical condition I suffer from is Hashimoto's Thyroiditis with Hypothyroidism. My thyroid is completely "ratty" thanks to an auto-immune disease that ravaged that gland. My endocrinologist told me that my metabolism is virtually non-existent and in order for me to lose weight, I need to work out twice as hard and twice as long in order to lose half as much weight as a healthy woman my age. That's where P90X comes in! Simply doing cardio isn't working for me. And as much as I don't feel like working out harder or longer, I realize that if I'm going to get healthier and be in the best shape of my life I NEED to do just that!

I have a very long-winded health saga to relate. In a nutshell, I had to be my own health advocate to find out why I was gaining weight and regardless of the cardio and weight training I was doing, why I wasn't losing weight. Weight Watchers didn't work, working with the dietician at the hospital didn't work, one doctor, and one endocrinologist later, I found a 2nd endocrinologist who diagnosed me rather quickly with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis coupled with Hypothyroidism. I cried after hearing the diagnosis, not because I was sad, but because for the FIRST time, I had a doctor who DID NOT say it was 'nothing', or that it was all in my head. I was relieved. However, I didn't expect to hear the following, "If you are going to lose weight, you are going to have to work out twice as hard, twice as long and twice as fast in order to lose half as much weight as a healthy woman your age. Your thyroid gland is "ratty" and is no longer doing it's job of regulating your metabolism, body temp., and the myriad other functions it is supposed to do." Now, if THAT'S not a daunting prognosis, I don't know what is! So, after spending some time on my own, walking 4 miles a day (thinking that would lose the weight) I realized what I must do. I realized I needed an extreme work-out, a 'boot camp' of sorts, to push me, to make me work out longer, harder and faster than I was working out on my own. I must purchase P90X and just push "play." So, I am at the beginning of my P90X journey. Today was my Day 3. I just started! That's an accomplishment in and of itself! I'll check back in and let you know how I'm doing. I look forward to using the tools with Teambeachbody to find support and reach my goals!
