I'm a Band Director of 30 years and still quite active in performance. I enjoy
being with my family, have 2 grown sons and a daughter-inlaw and am just
starting to get use to the empty nest feeling.

I realized I wasn't happy with my weight when I ballooned up to 191 lbs. last
Christmas. The many temptations and stress of the holidays had a great
effect. I'm down to 176 but would like to see

I live a very fast-paced and full life. When I hit an endurance wall, I always snacked
and ate until I could eat no more and at every meal. Sometimes 4 meals a day followed by
a full bag of microwave popcorn and a large bowl of ice cream with chocolate syrup 4 to 5
days out of 7. By the time I hit 45, it started to catch up to me. I became more prone to
illness, my allergies were relentless and I would console in my food cravings. I also
developed a large problem with acid reflux.
I always had the stamina to mow the lawn and complete the job within 45 minutes.
After I turned 50, I noticed that I had to take breaks every 15 minutes and had some real
pain in my knees, and chest. I talked to my doctor and had a treadmill test. I barely made
9 minutes and couldn’t catch my breath for 4 to 5 minutes after. The doctor said that
anyone that can go 9 minutes on a treadmill really doesn’t have a heart problem. I then
knew something had to be changed.
I started the “Slim’n Six” that summer and found it to be fine for me and my wife, at
first. She has had back surgery and we would modify the exercises to accommodate her.
Working out together seemed to make the most sense to keep us at it.
Because of my work and lifestyle, time has been the biggest problem. I was working
out 45 minutes with the program and walking on the treadmill 20 minutes each day. I
noticed immediate results. I haven’t kept up with the program, but started a walking
program with keeping a log since last Labor Day in 2007. I’ve logged over 1.7 million
steps! I’ve also kept up with 4 out 7 days of 20 minutes on the treadmill as my goal and
frequently go 6 out of 7. I’m back to mowing the lawn at one time through and ready for
more. My eating habits have changed along with my reflux problems and I’m finally down
to my goal weight area.
Many of my coworkers have noticed the weight loss and postural changes. I’ve been
told I look younger and many of my very critically minded middle school students guess
my age to be in the high 30’s to low 40’s. No one comes close to my 53 years.
My coach is Perry Tinsley. He’s an excellent coach and very supportive of all his charges.
He’s always uplifting and loves to share by emails all of our groups accomplishments. My
wife and I are lucky to have him as a coach and close friend.
