I could be a poster boy for yoyo dieting. Three times in my life I have lost over 30 pounds. Each time by using only calorie restriction and will power, no real program. After each time I lost the weight, I felt so good and swore I would never get fat again. The weight would always creep back, slowly but surely. I could always rationalize it and say that tomorrow, next week, or next month, I would go back on a diet. I was lacking proper nutrition principles.
My latest setback happened about three years ago when I developed a foot condition called Plantar Fasciitis. My excess weight contributed to it. I could hardly walk let alone do any type of exercise. It was very frustrating to want to get in shape, especially when my unit was getting ready to deploy to Iraq. During our pre-deployment training, I had surgery on both of my feet and continued to rehab as I continued my flying medevac missions in Iraq. About a year ago I started feeling good enough to try some exercise. Let me go back here for a minute....
Back in 2002, I purchased P90. I started it but after about a month, I gave up. The program was great, but I was lacking motivation. Since then, I had been looking for the right piece of equipment, or program that would be the magic bullet to get me on a regular program. Treadmill, Total Gym, Ab Lounge, Universal Machine, etc. I was great at buying equipment but lousy about using it. I really liked the Beachbody products though and felt that I had found the right fitness products. I purchased Power Half Hour, Great Boby Guaranteed, P90X, and Fast 10. All great programs. When I was packing my bags for my deployment, I thought I would bring these programs and bands with me and use them (Ya right, I thought).
Now back to a when I was ready to change my body. I had gotten to the point where I was tired of how I looked and how I felt. I was also feeling at a crossroads in my life. I needed to make a choice. Do I finally get serious about a lifestyle of fitness and nutrition, or do I give up and accept that I was 40 and would accept being out of shape and lazy. I chose to make a commitment to getting fit and staying that way.
I was stationed at a very primitive Forward Operating Base in Iraq and was amazed with what I could do with very little space and the Beachbody fitness products. It was quite a revelation to me that I didn't need all that equipment that is just filling up my basement to get a great strength and cardio training workout! I got by quite well with a 6' x 6' living/workout space. I also improvised a workout area out of an abandoned wooden shack near our living area. I started with setting some goals that I wanted to accomplish, then started off slowly with Fast 10 and then I moved to P90X. I then started mixing in some Turbo Jam, P90 Master Series, and Power Half Hour. With all my choices, I never get bored so I stay motivated. I also signed up to be a Coach while I was in Iraq. I consider this a lifelong journey. I know that now with my deployment over I can't go back to my old bad habits. I decided to get rid of all that equipment I didn't need and to stick with the Beachbody fitness programs, good nutrition, and the motivation/peer support, found here in the Team Beachbody Club.
